How My Morning Routine Made Me a Better Mom

“If you aren’t a morning person, get ready to be one. You’ll have no other choice once you have kids”.

I probably heard this line at least 500 times before having a baby. I remember hoping and praying it wouldn’t come true. I’d always been a night owl and didn’t want to change what I thought was a perfectly great relationship. Late nights are when I felt most productive, present and at peace.

But what everyone warned ended up being true. Most kids are up super early—especially mine! My youngest wakes up at 6am no matter what. Yes, even on weekends. 😐The mornings I’d roll out of bed the same time as my boys are the very days I tended to be short tempered and stressed. My day literally started with being pulled in 3 different directions while rushing to be on time and someone usually losing something in the hustle (mostly me misplacing the dang keys 🙃). There didn’t ever seem to be enough time or energy in a day which didn’t make for a very pleasant mommy.

So when I finally had enough I had to do what most moms do: adapt. And it surprisingly had a direct impact on my happiness. I quickly learned that the early bird really does get the worm. When I took the time to pour into myself first thing in the morning, it gave me the energy I needed to take better care of my family and be productive throughout the day. Here’s a peek at what my mornings look like now:

WAKE UP AT 5AM

It helps that most days, Lew wakes up at the same time. This gives us an hour to enjoy some quiet moments all to ourselves.

PRAY

I love taking this time to get my instructions for the day. Just because I put a plan in place, doesn’t always mean things run smoothly. I’ve found that prayer first thing is the best way to find out what path to take for the day while also giving me peace of mind.

MAKE BED

Making the bed and tidying up improves my mood. Ask Lew! I’m a much happier mom when our place is in order. Not to mention it just looks better. 🤗

NOURISHMENT

Lew and I try to drink a gallon of water a day and take our vitamins. Adding this step to my morning routine has helped me stay consistent. I used to be so rushed that I’d forget and be taking my vitamins on an empty stomach and/or downing a gallon of water towards the end of the day (not so fun on my bladder). I’ve recently started taking Alive! Women’s Gummy Multivitamins from Nature’s Way and am really happy with them. I used to dread taking vitamins, but don’t now that I’ve found some that taste good and don’t make my stomach hurt. I’ve been feeling great with a lot more energy! Now I better own my day while giving my body what it needs. If you’re looking for the right kind of nutrients to help fuel your day I highly recommend checking the Alive! Women’s Gummy Multivitamins out HERE.

GET DRESSED

I usually put my clothes out the night before, even if I’m planning on wearing sweatpants all day. It saves me so much time and allows me to get dressed faster. I’d almost forgotten how nice it is to get ready alone in peace. I also created a playlist that I listen to with music that pumps me up for the day.

And that’s it! It took a couple months to create a real routine that worked, but this simple regiment has proven most successful for a smoother start to our day. If you struggle in the mornings, then getting up earlier may be a good solution. Take some time to fill yourself up first thing so that you can give more calmly and more freely to your family.
